A managed cPanel VPS is a virtual server on which the provider installs and maintains the operating system and cPanel & WHM, and usually includes the cPanel licence for a small number of accounts. This page compares a managed cPanel VPS with a managed PFHW server, our own product, on four points: who patches, who holds the licence, account limits and price.
The price examples come from three providers that publish managed cPanel plans. They are examples, not a ranking. We also list the gaps of PFHW in the last section, because they decide whether a move makes sense for you.
What a managed cPanel VPS usually includes
There is no standard scope for a managed cPanel VPS. Each provider writes its own list, so compare the lists, not the label 'managed'. The table shows what three providers state on their own pages.
| Provider | Updates and patches | Backups | Migration | Other points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hosterion | Operating system and cPanel updates, with proactive and emergency installation of critical security updates | Backup set-up and a monthly restore test | Up to 20 cPanel accounts from the previous host | Monitoring, malware scan on request, 24/7 support for site set-up and troubleshooting, firewall and ModSecurity rules |
| Ginernet | Security patches and updates for the operating system, cPanel and ordered software, with a check afterwards | Daily local copy on a backup disk; JetBackup is an extra (remote copies every 6 hours) | Free migration with no downtime, as stated | 24/7 monitoring; root access included; the page says management is not a general technical department |
| Time4VPS | The page says the provider takes care of the server side and its configuration updates | Included in the price; restoration is free | Not stated on the page we read | CloudLinux OS; cPanel is the panel on the plans we read |
Common points are updates for the operating system and cPanel, monitoring and backups. Differences are in the details: how fast critical patches are applied, whether restores are tested, how much help you get with site problems, and whether a malware scanner is included or paid.
Why teams choose managed cPanel hosting
Managed cPanel hosting suits teams that know the cPanel interface and want a dedicated server, but do not want to administer Linux themselves. The provider handles the operating system, the panel updates and monitoring. The team keeps the day-to-day work in the panel: creating accounts, adding domains, managing mail boxes and databases. For an agency, the main attraction is that clients and staff do not need to learn a new interface.
The trade-offs are the licence cost, which grows with the account count, and a scope that differs from one provider to the next.
What to ask a managed cPanel provider
- Which layers do you patch: operating system, cPanel, web server, PHP and security tools? Hosterion and Ginernet list these in their scope.
- How fast do you apply critical updates, and do you check the sites afterwards?
- Are restores tested? Hosterion lists a monthly restore test. Ginernet restores the whole account from its daily local copy unless JetBackup is added.
- Which extras cost money? Hosterion lists CloudLinux at 13 EUR per month and Ginernet lists JetBackup at 10 EUR per month.
- What does the price do when you add accounts or when cPanel changes its licence prices on 16 December 2026?
Who licenses and who patches
The cPanel licence
cPanel is licensed per server, and each server needs its own licence. The price depends on the number of accounts. On the pages we read, all three providers include a licence for 5 accounts in the plan price. Hosterion states that more accounts raise the monthly price. The table shows the cPanel Store list prices from 16 December 2026 next to Hosterion's price list for more accounts. Providers set their own prices, so the figures are not comparable one to one.
| Accounts | cPanel Store list price, from 16 December 2026 (USD per month) | Hosterion price for licence and management (EUR per month, added to the VPS price) |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 5 | Admin: 38.99 | Included |
| Up to 30 | Pro: 58.99 | 21 |
| Up to 50 | Premier: 76.99 (covers up to 100) | 34 |
| Up to 100 | Premier: 76.99 | 71 |
| Up to 150 | Premier: 76.99 plus 50 accounts at 0.55 each, which is 104.49 | 121 |

Who patches what
On a managed cPanel VPS the provider patches the operating system and cPanel in the scope it publishes. You remain responsible for the websites: the code, plugins and themes, and the content. This is the same on a managed PFHW server. There, our engineers handle network edge configuration, system monitoring, firewall maintenance, operating system security patches and backup administration. Customers keep control of their sites and application code.
Ask any provider in writing what happens to a critical security update outside office hours, and who restores a site after a failed update.
Account limits
A cPanel account is a cPanel user that manages websites, files, domains and email. A WHM reseller account counts as an account. A plan that includes 5 accounts therefore allows 5 separate logins. Time4VPS states that the number of websites is unlimited, but that more than 5 accounts need a licence upgrade at extra cost.
This matters for agencies. If each client gets a separate login, an agency with 12 clients needs at least 12 accounts, which is the 30-account tier, and 40 clients need the 100-account tier. On PFHW, every plan includes the control panel with no limit on sites or accounts. The real limit is the server: its vCPU, RAM and storage.
Price examples from vendor pages

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Time4VPS Managed Linux VPS mini | 2 vCPU, 6 GB RAM, 50 GB, CloudLinux OS, cPanel Admin | Not re-verified: read the current price on the provider page | 5 | Billing options differ by term; read the provider page |
| Time4VPS Managed Linux VPS midi | 4 vCPU, 10 GB RAM, 50 GB | Not re-verified: read the current price on the provider page | 5 | Billing options differ by term; read the provider page |
| Hosterion Managed VPS CM8 | 2 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 60 GB SSD | 91 EUR | 5 | CloudLinux is a separate add-on at 13 EUR per month |
| Hosterion Managed VPS CM16 | 4 vCPU, 16 GB RAM, 120 GB SSD | 124 EUR | 5 | Extra IPv4 address 2 EUR per month |
| Ginernet Managed VPS, minimum configuration | 2 vCores, 4 GB RAM, 100 GB plus a backup disk of twice that size | From 90 EUR (0.125 EUR per hour) | 5 (Admin Cloud) | Billed hourly; JetBackup is an extra 10 EUR per month |
| PFHW Starter | 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 50 GB | 29 EUR, excluding VAT | No limit | Monthly, no contract; price does not rise on renewal; email is a separate add-on |
| PFHW Business | 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 80 GB | 39 EUR, excluding VAT | No limit | Same terms |
| PFHW Pro | 6 vCPU, 12 GB RAM, 120 GB | 59 EUR, excluding VAT | No limit | Same terms |
Whether the other providers' prices include VAT is not stated in the text we read. PFHW prices exclude VAT. Hardware, backup scope, email and data location differ between rows, so the rows are not like for like.
Two points are worth noting, although the rows are not like for like in hardware, backups or email. The listed managed cPanel plans at 2 vCPU with 5 accounts start at 91 EUR per month for Hosterion CM8 and 90 EUR for Ginernet, while a PFHW Starter plan with the same vCPU count is 29 EUR and has no account limit. And cPanel licence prices change on 16 December 2026, so ask a provider whether your price is fixed or follows the licence.

Where PFHW fits, and where it does not
A managed PFHW server fits an agency, freelancer or reseller who hosts many client sites, wants one flat server price without account tiers, and wants us to patch and monitor the server. It runs in the EU with GDPR applying. You can request a demo, and after the demo we can set up a trial server.
A managed cPanel VPS is the better match in these cases:
- Your clients already work in the cPanel interface and you do not want to change that.
- You need automatic certificates. PFHW has no AutoSSL or Let's Encrypt issuing.
- You want email in the same panel. PFHW email is a separate Mailcow server. There are no mailing lists, and autoresponders, filters and spam settings are not in the PFHW portal. Webmail belongs to the mail server.
More gaps to know before a move: there is no hotlink or leech protection, no per-account dedicated IP management (accounts share the server IPv4 and IPv6 addresses), no 'forgot password' flow by email, and no server-to-server transfer tool like the WHM Transfer Tool. The interface is English only. The importer does not bring over cPanel mailing lists, autoresponders, email filters or spam-filter settings.
Frequently asked questions
What is a managed cPanel VPS?
It is a virtual server with cPanel & WHM where the provider installs and maintains the operating system and the panel. The scope is set by each provider, so read the list of what is covered.
Does managed cPanel hosting include the licence?
In the examples we read, yes, for 5 accounts. Hosterion lists higher prices for 30, 50 and 100 accounts, and Time4VPS says an upgrade for more accounts costs extra. Ask what happens to the price when your account count grows.
Who updates cPanel on a managed server?
On the pages we read, Hosterion and Ginernet both list operating system and cPanel updates in their management scope. Time4VPS says it handles configuration updates on the server side. Ask for the scope in writing.
How much does a managed cPanel VPS cost?
On the pages we read in November 2026, the 2 vCPU plans with 5 accounts that we could confirm were 91 EUR (Hosterion CM8) and from 90 EUR (Ginernet) per month. Hardware, backups and extras differ, and cPanel licence prices change on 16 December 2026.
Can I move from a managed cPanel VPS to PFHW?
Yes. PFHW imports cPanel backup packages after a dry run that shows the changes, and a failed import is rolled back completely. Mailing lists, autoresponders, email filters and spam-filter settings are not imported. Portal uploads are limited to 2 GB per package, and larger packages use the command-line tool.
